Through a Gazette dated 3 October 2012, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology announced compulsory registration of 15 products. The order prohibits the manufacture, storing, selling, distributing, etc., of the goods.

For the implementation of the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology designated the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). New Delhi is the home of BIS’s headquarters for Customer Relationship Management.
The law prohibits manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and sellers from making, storing, importing, selling, or distributing products that do not comply with Indian standards and do not have the BIS Standard Mark with a unique registration number.
This scheme covers 77 products now, of which 63 are produced by the government, five are produced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Department of Heavy Industries produces 8, and one is produced by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizer. BIS certification for battery also citizens can avail. How to get BIS Registration Certificate?

- Step 1: Samples should be submitted to a BIS-certified lab
